Hello everyone, and welcome to another Runarcana update!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 25, 2024, we published the preview of update 0.96, introducing a new creature and monster system. A little over a year and a half has passed since then, and because of our silence during that time, many people came to believe that the project had ended, been abandoned and left in the state it was in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A great deal happened during that year and a half, not only with Runarcana, which passed through two anniversaries and reached six and seven years of existence without a publication, celebration or even a mention of the occasion, but also in the lives of those who have kept Runarcana in development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The silence was partly due to the scale of the challenge before us. This \u201cMonsters and Creatures\u201d update, developed by many hands over the last three years, was intended not merely to provide a catalogue of enemies and adversaries for players, but to introduce a functional system that allows Game Masters to create new creatures, adapt existing monsters and use them in far more versatile ways than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike previous updates, 0.96 was implemented gradually and without much fanfare, saving the announcement for the moment when the new monster and creature system was ready. The comments, criticism and suggestions concerning the 0.96 Preview greatly helped with the adjustments and corrections made for this update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before continuing to discuss the update, it is important to acknowledge the many hands that brought it to life. They belong primarily to Dennys, Mizuhiro, O Vivi and Arddhu, the person writing this. I had already begun creating material for monster balancing while, at the same time, Dennys was carrying out a much larger, broader and more forward-looking project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As this was happening, I began to have less and less time for Runarcana, which led me to spend most of the time I still had providing guidance, reviewing material and establishing its direction. The raw material developed by Dennys eventually reached hundreds of pages and was extremely well crafted, but it still needed refinement and polishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mizuhiro took on the difficult task of organizing everything that was already complete, as well as reviewing and structuring the material. Meanwhile, I, Arddhu, not only in the monster material but throughout this update as a whole, acted more as a coordinator than as an actual author. My role was primarily that of an editor and someone responsible for carrying the project\u2019s vision forward, managing the talents working to make this update possible and ensuring its completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My distance from Runarcana over the last three years is obvious. I never left completely, but I could no longer dedicate the same amount of time to the project that I once did. This was mainly due to work and personal matters. Contrary to what some people claimed for several years without presenting any evidence, I have always credited people for the work they produced and have never concealed their authorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, I must also thank \u201cO Vivi,\u201d who helped Mizuhiro with some creations and revisions. Even so, it is undeniable that the person who carried the Runarcana torch more than anyone else over the last three years was Mizuhiro. He began by helping with smaller updates and contributing ideas. When some of those ideas were rejected, he knew how to rework them, and he gradually aligned himself with the purpose and vision of what Runarcana aims to achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, I would like to thank Dennys, whose work was essential and represented hundreds of hours spent developing the foundations of this material, enduring criticism, corrections and redirections from me; Vivi, for bringing interesting ideas and contributing to the project; and Mizuhiro, for maintaining the quality, care and dedication that you know to be the Runarcana standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will now let Mizuhiro describe the experience in his own words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Shine, Mizuhiro<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I, Mizuhiro, began contributing to Runarcana sometime between 2022 and 2023, around the release of update 0.94. Over these three years, I helped with a few smaller updates, but nothing as large as 0.96. At first, my role was only to assist with smaller tasks created by other people. Later, I designed a subclass and created a few creatures. As scheduling conflicts arose, however, I ended up becoming the person with the greatest availability to contribute to Runarcana. New ideas emerged, production increased, more material was completed and, as a result, I dedicated the last few months almost exclusively to Runarcana and this update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without question, this was the period in which I had the greatest influence on the official system. It took many nights and many pages of text to reach this point, but the current result feels satisfying for the system as a whole. The Afflictions, in particular, were by far the part of the update I found most interesting to develop. One of the things that originally drew me to Runarcana was its mechanics that go beyond being a mere \u201ccombat simulator.\u201d Although I also helped with Crafts and Poisons, developing the Afflictions gave me the opportunity to become directly responsible for one of those mechanics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the last few months, producing content for the update became part of my routine, largely because I wanted to complete it as soon as possible and see the conclusion of an update containing so much of my own work. I had previously created a subclass and Craft formulas, but the amount of material that ended up in my hands for this particular update was far greater than before. With so many things under my responsibility, developing a certain \u201cneed for completion\u201d was inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that everything has been completed, I hope the result meets expectations and that, from this point onward, I will continue to have opportunities to contribute more and more to the system. Runarcana is, above all else, Arddhu\u2019s creation, but this particular update also contains a great deal of my work. In that sense, it represents a personal milestone for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>What Should You Expect from Future Updates?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Arddhu again: No major changes are expected, at least not to systems that are already firmly established or even to the classes. Some adjustments will certainly be made to everything involving magic and spells, but these will be targeted updates to features and balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delivering update 0.96 is one of the final steps toward completing the system, as previously mentioned, since only two more substantial updates remain ahead of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
